Aveling & Porter R6 Roller

On behalf of the owners we are pleased to offer for sale this stunning little Aveling & Porter Roller, a rare and unusual engine it is presented in excellent condition throughout and wants for nothing.

Aveling 3781 was built in 1896 and is a 4NHP Type R6 Roller. It was originally ordered by Lord Langattock of the Hendre Estate near Monmouth for use on the estate roads as such was built to a narrow configuration with the flywheel inside the hornplates. The engine was registered with Monmouthshire County Council as number 37 and still retains the original plate.

In recent history the engine underwent a full boiler rebuild in 1996 and kept in a private museum with only the occasional steaming before being sold in 2012. Shortly after being sold the engine was fully stripped again and on reassembly received a full professional repaint and remains in excellent condition, the roller looks very much as it would of done when it left the Rochester works in 1896. It was part of the 2013 Great Dorset Steam Fair Steam Roller special and world record.

Being an early design the boiler is quite large for the size of the engine as such it is free steaming and easy to get along with. Water fed is standard Aveling arrangement with Penberthy injector and mechanical water pump.

The engine is ideal for someone who enjoys rallies and local road runs, being a 6 tonner (actually 7.5tons) means you can transport it easily on a rigid lorry without the need of an expensive low-loader. It is single speed and comfortably trundles along around 3 mph, so although probably a bit slow for a full days roading will give plenty of enjoyment on the road to the local hostelry and pottering around the rally field. Little single cylinder Avelings do have a reputation for being a bit jumpy and a handful, personally we dont feel that to be the case with 3781, she is an easy engine to get to grips with and would suit someone new to full size engine ownership or someone already with an engine looking for something a bit smaller and easier to handle.

Overall this is a lovely engine that will give many years trouble free-enjoyment and being a rare and unusual roller will no doubt bring considerable interest at events from the public and other members or the steam fraternity.
