9" Beyer Peacock Steam Wagon

On behalf of the owner we are pleased to offer for sale this unique and brilliant 9” Scale steam lorry, probably the first ¾ scale engine to ever be built it offers the owner almost full size engine owner experience with the advantage that she fits in the garage and can be transported on a trailer behind a 4x4.

Built by well-known and respected engineer Ray Milliken, Ray had an interest in creating the lost and unusual, never opting for a “common” design and was an experienced builder of large scale (including full size) steam vehicles. When it come to choosing a Steam Lorry to build the Beyer Peacock fulfilled his criteria with it being rare from new, there being no survivors and it also being an earlier design.

The Locomotive type boiler has been independently inspected from new with boiler history going back through to when she was first built. It is fitted with 80 ¾” Boiler tubes and also 2 x 2” tubes for a superheater, however the superheater was never fitted and these have been blanked off from new. The boiler runs at 150psi and is water fed by a crankshaft driven pump and reliable steam injector.

The engine itself is a double high arrangement which chain drives the rear axle via an intermediary shaft which has two gears. The Lorry is an impressive performer and being double high pulls away effortless by simply opening the regulator, low gear is only needed for particularly steep hills or when a slower speed is required such as pottering around the rally field.

As per the full size, driving is a two-person arrangement with the driver and fireman sitting either side of the boiler. Like all steam lorries, firing and keeping steam is more demanding than a traction engine however you quickly get used to it and on the road the engine performs very well indeed averaging 15-18mph.

The lorry comes with lots of accessories and bits and pieces that have accumulated over the years and make her a practical engine for road and rally use, including weather shields for the front of the cab.

Overall the engine is in very good condition having been well looked after and maintained by previous owners. The paint and body work is all original and comes up well and she is ready to rally and enjoy from collection.
