4" Little Samson. Savage

On behalf of the owners we are pleased to offer for sale this 4” Little Samson Steam Tractor, a design we are particularly fond of having owned a 6” version ourselves. Originally built by Savages of Kings Lynn to comply with the Heavy Motor Cars Order of 1905, the Little Samson was a 5 ton tractor meaning the models come out smaller than the equivalent scale traction engine.

The Little Samson has proved a popular engine, they are strong performers on the rally field being easy to steam and surprisingly powerful. Size wise they sit between a 3” and 4” Traction engine making them ideal for someone who wants the ease of use of the 4” engine but may be limited by transport or storage options.

Built to a generally good standard we had the engine in steam for most of the afternoon when it arrived with us and was quite impressed by how well it goes and it gave the feeling of being a solid little engine. It would be fair to say the paintwork lets it down somewhat and although a full repaint isn’t necessary a few changes such as repainting the tender and cleaning off the red paint on the motion etc would make a big difference to its overall appearance.

The commercially made steel boiler is water fed by a crank shaft driven pump, hand pump and steam injector. The boiler is reported to be in very good condition having been tested by an independent boiler inspector.

The engine comes ready to rally and enjoy with all the required accessories including driving seat, firing irons, extension chimney, coal, oil and a days tuition. For further information or to arrange a viewing please do not hesitate to contact us.
