4" Garrett, Ransomes Thresher and Baler

One of the signs of a quality and well cared for engine is one that looks considerably younger than it years, and this Garrett which was originally completed in 2007 in one such example. The engine along with the 4" Threshing box and Baler we have also just listed for sale is the work of an accomplished model engineer and workmanship is to a high standard throughout.

The Garrett is a really well sorted engine, it gives the feel of being solidly built and with some useful additions. The first thing most will notice is the gear inside the flywheel, this addition is for a geared crank handle which bolts to make moving it around easier when out of steam.

The engine hadn't been steamed for a number of years before we picked it up (last ticket was 2017) and apart from the injector and couple of glands slightly weeping it worked pretty much faultlessly. These jobs will be sorted along with a full 10 year inspection, hydraulic and steam test will be conducted by an independent boiler inspector before sale. We have done a preliminary inspection of the boiler and all seems to be in very good order with healthy plate thicknesses throughout.

Paintwork has been done with a brush and coach enamel to a good standard, unlike a large number of engines we see, it seems to have plenty on which is one of the reasons it has fared so well and will no doubt continue to do so if looked after.

Over the years we have had quite a few 4" Garretts come through the door, they are generally powerful, free steaming engines offering something a bit heavier than the 4" Burrell and more substantial build wise than the 4" Foster. This one in particularly stands out as being one of the better examples we have had in and I am confident anyone looking for a 4" Traction Engine that is ready to work and enjoy you wont be disappointed.

The ultimate accessories for your 4" Traction Engine and a guaranteed entry to any steam rally, we are pleased to offer for sale this beautifully built and fully operational 4" Ransomes Threshing Machine and Baler.

After completing the handsome 4" Garrett we have also just listed for sale the builder embarked on the next project of giving the engine something to do. Its fair to say 4" Threshers are in short supply, we know of only 3 others in existence, they are a complicated build and require someone who is not only a good machinist but a very good carpenter. Fortunately the builder of this was both plus an all round clever chap who scaled up the available 2" drawings and then made the necessary changes for it to work with full size wheat.

The Ransomes baler we believe was built using the drawings and castings available from John Rex Model Engineering, we have seen a few more of these over the years but they are still not common by any means.

As you can see the Thresher and Baler are mounted on transport trolleys, these make moving them around easier and being that bit taller makes it easier for the public to see and enjoy them running. These are quickly demountable should you prefer to have the implements sitting on their own wheels. Included in the sale is all the necessary drive belts and there is also some scale grain sacks, spare bale twin and other bits and bobs.

In the first instance we are offering the Thresher and Baler together, should someone also wish to buy the full outfit with the Traction Engine as well a saving is being offered as the owner would love to see these go to a new home as a complete set.
