4" Clayton Steam Wagon
Rarely seen in any scale apart from 2” we are pleased to offer for sale this 4” Clayton steam lorry. The lorry is the work of an award winning model engineer and although referred to by the builder as his “toy” the quality of machining and general build is to the same very high standard as his other works.
Its fair to say the wheels do the lorry no justice at all but these could easily be changed by the new owner for better suited pneumatics or more prototypical cast type wheels with solid tyres. Look past these though and you have a very nicely made model which is ready for the finishing touches such as cab signwriting. Although completed a number of years ago, on completion the builder decided for him building models was more enjoyable than running them so the lorry has had hardly any use and is in almost as new condition.
The vertical boiler is silver soldered copper and water fed by a crankshaft driven pump, steam injector and hand pump. A superheater is also fitted so once warmed up makes for a very efficient and free steaming boiler. Our independent boiler inspector gave the boiler a clean bill of health with a new hydraulic test and steam test recently completed.
Power comes from a twin high pressure engine mounted below, like the 2” counterpart the engine is powerful for its size and this 4” version will comfortably pull a couple of adults. The engine can be run when stationary as drive to the rear axle can be easily disengaged.
This lorry is really good fun to steam and run, it is notably smaller than the more common 4.5” Foden so for comparison would say it is more an alternative to a large 3” rather than a 4” Traction Engine.
It will come with everything you need to run: coal, oil and firing irons. For the time being tuition will be provided by a video of the engine in steam however as soon as covid-restrictions allow in person tuition can continue at our yard or on delivery.
