4" Burrell Traction Engine

We are very fortunate to get some lovely engines through and every now and again something stands out as being particularly special. This Burrell is one of those engines.

Professionally built in the early 1990s the quality of the machining, fit and finish is to an exceptionally high standard. The traditional paintwork and lining stand up to close inspection and has mellowed beautifully. The engine is based on the LSM design and castings however has a slightly large diameter boiler and modified regulator for better operation.

In steam it is one of the quietest and best running engines we have had in, it ticks over effortlessly and when trundling about has plenty of power and a nice chuff from the exhaust. The straked wheels are not too bumpy even on hard surfaces, our yard is concrete and even in top gear did not shake us or the engine to bits!

The boiler was professionally built and although we would normally be cautious of a 30 year old boiler it is in very good condition. It was built using ⅜” plate throughout and ultrasonic testing has found little wastage, most modern boilers are built using thinner materials so in most areas this is thicker than what you would buy new today. It is also fitted with copper tubes which offer much longer service life than standard steel. An independent boiler inspector has given it a thorough inspection with hydraulic and steam test, previous boiler history and certification from the original builders is also present. The smokebox has a heavy weight internal ring fitted to prevent wheelies.

Included in the sale is the riding trolley/water cart, the 200l water drum will keep you going all day! As with all our ready to rally engines it will also come with a full set of firing irons, a days tuition, coal and oil to get you up and running straight away.
