4" Alfred Dodman TE.
We are pleased to offer for sale this well presented 4" Alfred Dodman Traction Engine, we have had a couple of these engines in over the years and they are a firm favourite standing a bit taller than the more common Fosters and Burrells and an all round stronger performer.
For those who dont know, the Alfred Dodman company only produced a small handful of traction Engines and the Single Crank Compound design originated in the early 1890s. Unfortunately for the company, Burrells took umbrage and took the company to court over copyright-infringement of the SCC design, the original engine was returned to the works and dismantled. Its fair to say if the miniatures are anything to go by then the full size would have been a seriously impressive machine!
The engine has come to us from the builder who is an accomplished model engineer, so much so it is now their full time job. As such workmanship throughout is to a high standard with even the steam valves being purpose built rather than bought off the shelf. The engine gives the feel of being really well sorted and is ready to just get on and go enjoy. For someone looking to possibly 'upgrade' from a 4" Burrell or Foster then this could well be an option, the Dodman stands that bit bigger and on the road will march away from the more common Traction Engine varieties with the top gear being particularly long.
The engine is fitted with a CE marked Bell Boiler and underwent a retube, thorough inspection and hydraulic test last year with an independent boiler inspector. It will be sold with a fresh annual steam test for the new owner. Water feed is through a crank driven pump and steam injector.
Viewing is welcome at our premises in Suffolk and like all the ready-to-rally engines will come with a full set of firing irons, coal, oil, tube brush, extension chimney and days tuition if required.
