4" Alfred Dodman SCC

On behalf of the owners we are pleased to offer for sale this stunningly presented 4” Alfred Dodman SCC, built to a high standard this rare engine goes as well as it looks.

You would easily be forgiven for not knowing the Alfred Dodman name, the short story is they were a machinery manufacturer based in Kings Lynn who built a handful of engines, one being a Single Crank Compound built around 1893 of which this model is based on. Unfortunately, the engine was broken up shortly after as Burrells threatened the company with litigation claiming it infringed on the copyright of their SCC design. It is a shame the design was squashed as if the full size is anything like the miniature it would have been a cracking engine and dare I say it….better than the equivalent Burrell. It has some of the lovely design features of the earlier Traction Engines such as the large open gears and wooden front axle.

The Dodman comes out a large engine, it sits taller than equivalent scale Garrett or Foster but is overall slightly shorter. With the SCC cylinder block at the front its well weighted down meaning minimal risk of popping a wheelie. On the road it is simply an awesome machine, the large driving wheels, generous gearing and balanced crank means it is quick, much quicker than any other 4” 2-speed engine we have driven, not quite 3 speed road loco speeds but not far off!

The commercially made boiler runs at 170psi, it is water feed by a crankshaft driven pump, steam injector and a back-up hand operated pump. It has a large deep firebox so once hot is very free steaming and easy to get on with.

As always, the engine comes with everything you need to run; coal, oil, firing irons and a day’s tuition, the riding trolley in the pictures is also included. The engine is coming into us week/commencing 11th July and available for viewings at our premises, before this it can be seen at a Hollowell Rally (2/3 July) and Rempstone (9/10th) with the owner who is happy to discuss the engine with any potential buyers.
