3" Marshall Freelance
A very interesting and really well sorted little engine this one, a freelance design but with inspiration taken from Marshalls in areas.
The engine has recently undergone a full overhaul and is presented in excellent aesthetic and mechanical condition. As can be seen in the photos she is a well-proportioned and handsome thing. Being a freelance design the builder has been able to incorporate some interesting features including the radial valve gear and piston valve cylinder block arrangement. The gearing is not the standard traction engine arrangement but a set of gears which are constantly meshed and engage by a spider that moves internally.
The boiler is also slightly unusual as it’s a Briggs Boiler design, in operational terms it makes no difference to running the engine compared to the standard design seen on most traction engines. It is steel outer with inner copper tubes and as such steams up quickly. It is water fed through a crankshaft driven pump and hand pump. The briggs boiler is quite well used on model railway locomotives and known for their free-steaming ability and efficiency.
The engine comes as a complete ready to rally including a driving trolley, coal, oil, firing irons and tuition are all included in the sale.
She comes out similar overall size to a 3” Burrell but has a bigger boiler capacity.
