6" Little Samson Steam Tractor

We are pleased to offer for sale this 6" Little Samson Steam Tractor. We have had a number of these engines in over the years and hold the design in high-regard for being a powerful, useable and all round excellent performer on the rally-field and road. It is both a great first engine or a noticeable step up from a 4" Traction engine but still a sensible size and weight for transport.

In steam it comes across as a really well sorted engine and barking up the hill it has to be in the top 5 for best sounding as well! It was completed in 2014 and in the current owners tenure has undergone a series of improvements and works, including a new big-end bearing and re-honed cylinder with new rings recently so she ticks over beautifully.

The original builder was a capable engineer with it being a solidly built engine with the useful addition of roller bearings on the crank mains, front wheels and even the die block. Cosmetically the engine strikes the balance of being well looked after but starting to get the "working days" patina. The roof can be quickly removed if not desired but when driving doesn't get in the way, it also have lights fitted up in the canopy for night times outside the beer tent with a battery hidden in the drivers seat.

The boiler was built by the original owner rather than being bought commercially, this should not put anyone off as it is built like a tank! and comes with all the required welding and material certificates. The boiler is reported to be in sound condition with healthy plate thicknesses and was fitted with copper tubes in 2021 so these should give service for the full life of the boiler. Water feed is through a crank driven pump and reliable steam injector. The safety valve has been replaced with a Nabic safety valve but modified for a soft opening rather than the normal "POP". All recent testing has been done by well-regarded independent inspector.

Overall this is a cracking engine for someone to simply get on and start enjoying, it is road registered and comes with quite literally everything you may need including firing irons, tube brush, coal, oil, extension chimney, 4 wheel water cart, toolbox, spark arrestor, water drums etc.
