4.5" Foden SWB

On behalf of the owner, we are pleased to offer this particularly well-presented and freshly completed 4.5″ Steam Traction World Foden C-Type.

Only completed this year, the Foden is presented in virtually new condition and benefits from a host of thoughtful modifications and improvements carried out by an experienced miniature steam enthusiast. These aren't simply cosmetic changes; they make a noticeable difference to the usability and enjoyment of the engine.

One of the first things you will notice is the modified rear bodywork. The owner chose to remove the auxiliary water tanks and instead fit a ballast-tractor style rear. This gives considerably easier access on and off the Foden and makes the rear of the engine much more comfortable and practical. It also provides space for a couple of people to ride, whereas the standard arrangement is really intended for the driver alone. Whilst this does reduce the water capacity, the large underslung tank still provides a considerable supply.

- Battery box for the lights, with 12V outlet for a blower
- Twin Foster ratchet-type lubricators
- Cab-operated blower from the steam manifold
- Lagged steam pipes
- Swing firehole door providing a larger aperture for firing
- Chained oiler caps and gear pins — no more wondering where you've put them!

Another particularly nice touch is the Windermere kettle, neatly fitted inside the right-hand side of the cab.

The bodywork was painted by us for the owner in a two-pack, finish colour-matched to Crimson Lake, with the lining and signwriting professionally applied.

This is a relatively recent Steam Traction World kit, with the boiler completed in 2020. It was first hydraulically and steam tested in 2023, but as the engine was only completed this year it has seen very little use. The most recent steam test was carried out in June this year. All examinations have been undertaken by Hawkins Inspection Services, with the engine tested under the commercial scheme.

The owner is an experienced miniature steam enthusiast and has clearly put considerable thought into the modifications, resulting in an engine that is both very well presented and usable.

The reason for sale is simply that, after taking the Foden to a couple of rallies, the owner has decided that traction engines are more his thing. As he puts it, that's something he probably could have worked out a few years ago and saved himself a fair amount of time! Personally, we dont share the same sentiment, anyone who knows me will know how much I like a Foden, and I particularly like this one.

The Foden is road registered and ready to use. It comes complete with a full set of firing irons, tube brush, coal, oil and extension chimney, together with a day's tuition included for the new owner.
