4" Burrell SCC Road Loco

We are pleased to offer for sale this very well-presented and nicely sorted 4" Burrell SCC, built to the Live Steam Models drawings. Originally constructed in the late 1990s, this engine has benefited from a new CE-marked boiler and a comprehensive overhaul in 2021.

For anyone looking for a good, solid 4" engine that is ready to get out and enjoy, this Burrell ticks all the boxes. Having spent several hours in steam and completed numerous laps around the farm, it has proved itself to be a strong performer, steaming freely with plenty of power in reserve. It is also nicely set up, with the reverser allowing the engine to notch back smoothly.

The SCC configuration brings some worthwhile advantages over a conventional traction engine. The additional weight over the front axle helps keep the front end planted under load, while the belly tanks provide a useful increase in water capacity, extending the time between water stops.

The engine’s new CE-marked boiler entered service in 2021, with subsequent steam testing carried out at John Rex Model Engineers under the Northern Federation Model Engineering Clubs scheme. Under this scheme, the boiler requires a hydraulic test every two years, although this can be carried out without removing the lagging, making it a relatively straightforward process. Alternatively, given the boiler’s age, a transition to commercial boiler testing should be a simple option for those who prefer it.

Water feed is well covered, with a crank-driven pump, steam injector and a useful back-up hand pump.

The Burrell is offered complete and ready for the rally field, including a full set of firing irons, coal, oil, extension chimney, tube brush and a day's tuition if required. It is also fully road registered.
