On behalf of the owner we are pleased to offer for sale this honestly presented Aveling and Porter D-Type steam roller. D-Type denotes a compound cylinder with piston valves and 8 ton nominal weight, arguably the one to have for rallying and roading, big enough for two people on the man stand but not too big to single man, quick on the road (in roller terms) and pretty economical on coal and water.
Works number 12468 was one of the last of the piston-valve series to roll out of the Rochester Invicta works in 1929, it was supplied new to Bournemouth Corporation and stayed with them for its full working life being being sold into preservation circa 1963. The engine was purchased by a Mr Bill Storey who owned it for over 40 years, during this time it underwent a sympathetic restoration and received a new firebox in the 1980s. The roller was sold in 2015 to the current owner who has enjoyed the occasional steam up and local trip out with it attending only a couple of rallies in the last 10 years.
The engine carries some nice original features including the half length canopy and full set of spray gear for the rolls, a common addition for later built engines which would of been used on tarmac.
The engine is reported to be in general good mechanical condition with a decent set of gears, she runs well and is quiet on the road. The boiler has just undergone a 10-year examination with hydraulic and a fresh steam test will be conducted in the coming days so the Aveling will be ready to rally and enjoy for the foreseeable future without any major works being required. The engine was originally specified with an injector and crank driven pump however at some point the pump was swapped for a second injector, this was most probably done during its working life as we believe the other Bournemouth Corporation D-Type has had the same modification (also survived into preservation)
The roller is with the owner in Leicestershire and viewing is welcome by genuinely interested parties, where possible we may be able to help with part-exchanges and finance through our specialist broker. For further details please do not hesitate to contact us in the first instance.
Important Note: We recommend when purchasing any steam vehicle to employ the services of your own boiler inspector for independent advice and not solely rely on previous test reports.
