4" Foster T.E. 99% complete

We are pleased to offer for sale this nicely presented and very well sorted example of the popular LSM 4” Foster Traction engine. Recently re-tubed the engine is ready to rally and enjoy with scope for the owner to personalise to their own taste.

Being told “its one of the best you have seen” is something we hear on a regular basis and to be honest a comment we take with a pinch of salt however, with this engine the owner (also the builder) was 100% right it is one of the best running 4” Fosters we have seen. The engine ticks over and runs beautifully with the only noise coming from the ratchet of the lubricator and a ball clicking in the pump, trundling around the yard it performs admirably and pulls up the steep hill with no fuss at all. It sits on vulcanised rubber tyres making for a comfortable ride on the road.

Build quality throughout is to a very good standard and although the new owner may wish to titivate the engine to their own tastes with the addition of brass hub caps (supplied in the spares box), shiny chimney cowl and some lining etc mechanically the engine wants for nothing. The gear-guard is also 95% completed and almost ready for paint and fitting, a job the owner always intended on doing but never got round to.

The steel boiler looks to be in sound condition, boiler testing has been conducted at the owners Model engineering club and we have also had a good look over it; with the new tubes fitted last year it should provide years of trouble free steaming. As always we welcome independent inspections of any of our engines and happy to help the new owner should they wish to go down the commercial testing route. Water feed is through the crankshaft driven pump and a reliable steam injector.

The engine is supplied with a well thought out double driving trolley, this fixes to the back of the engine and the drivers weight is supported by castors meaning you can comfortably have two adults on the seat without popping wheelies! Also included is a full set of firing irons, coal, oil and a days tuition.
