We are pleased to offer for sale this well built and nicely presented 4.5" Foden Ballast Tractor and low-loader trailer combination. Due to a thin patch on the firebox a new boiler is required, fortunately we have one on order from John Rex Model engineers which is included in the sale and should be ready by the end of June.

The SWB ballast tractor proves a very practical option for both storage and transportation, unlike the LWB version it will fit in the back of a standard Vivaro size van. Most SWB versions are built with the extra rear tanks which means you can only really have the driver on the engine. This version does allow for the driver and couple of passengers to sit on the lorry itself. It is a double-high cylinder arrangement which in our opinion is the more practical option in this scale for rallying and ease of use than the compound variation.

The trailer is a well made bit of kit, it breaks down into 3 parts for transport and being made from aluminium is strong yet lightweight. We are happy to sell the engine without the trailer (£1500 off the asking price) but will not sell the trailer separately before the engine is sold.

The Foden is being sold as a project so offers the new owner a considerable saving on buying a ready to run engine. In comparison a new set of kits from Steam Traction World is £20,000 (not including the trailer.) However, should it be required we would be happy to fit the boiler at our workshop and undertake any other works the new owner would like doing as well, this would be done separately to the sale of the engine.

The new boiler is on order from John Rex Model Engineers and expected to be delivered by the end of June, The engine can be collected sooner and boiler will follow as soon as possible if required.

Important Note: We recommend when purchasing any steam vehicle to employ the services of your own boiler inspector for independent advice and not solely rely on previous test reports.
