3" Burrell Crane Engine

Some people may recognise this engine, we sold it late last year and it has just come back as part exchange for a 4” Traction Engine. It has come back as it left us but with the addition of a whistle and a new rope on the crane gear.

A nice change from the standard 3" Plastows Burrell Traction engine, this well-made example has been built with a fully working crane. I am surprised there are not more miniature engines built with cranes as it solves the issue of "popping a wheelie" and of course there is a lot of fun to be had lifting things.

The engine comes complete with everything you need to rally including a well-made riding trailer, 12 volt blower, firing irons, tube brush and extension chimney. We will also throw in a bag of coal, kindling and suitable oil.

The boiler is copper and has 3 water feeds; injector, crank driven pump and a hand pump. The injector is new but temperamental, whoever did the pipework has put too many bends and a check-valve in which inhibits reliable operation. However, when operating these Burrells we always run off the crank driven pump and the handpump offers a reliable back up across all pressures.

The engine was completed in 2016 and has seen very little use, mainly being used for private steam ups at home rather than extensive rallying as such it is very good condition and runs nicely. The gear change mechanism has disposed of the flip-bar which selects high or low gear, instead a grub screw is used.

As always, we would be more than happy to spend the day with the new owner showing them how to run and look after the engine.

The advertised price includes delivery to UK mainland via a pallet company should you choose to have the engine before travel restrictions are lifted. For people buying remotely we would be happy to send as many pictures and videos of the engine in steam as you would like.
