Scammell Highwayman and Living Van
1967 & 1946
On behalf of the owners we are pleased to advertise for sale this lovely Scammell Highwayman and showman’s living van outfit. The well-known pair have been regularly rallied and are a popular exhibit at events as well as practical and luxurious accommodation.
The Scammell was built in 1967 and was registered new to Leonard J Stamp in Avonmouth as a tractor unit pulling tankers. The lorry entered preservation but as a workhorse for Paggetts pulling a low-loader moving Fowler Road Locomotive “City of Hull”. The engine is a Gardener LX 150hp and has a top speed of around 50mph.
The living wagon was manufactured in 1946 by W H Woodcock in Essex for the Cogger Showmans family also based in the county. The delivery to the family was documented in Worlds Fair at the time, a copy of which is in the history file with the van. The living van was extensively restored in the early 1990s by the previous owner, Mr Malcolm Smith, and paired with the Scammell.
Mr Smith and his wife extensively travelled the UK and Europe with the outfit for many years until advancing age meant in 2007 it was time to sell on. The lorry was purchased by the Smith family (a different Smith) and they have continued to enjoy, cherish, and rally the pair ever since.
