6" Foden Steam Lorry
Steam Test Exp:
The 6” Foden is one of favourite engines and over the years we have enjoyed driving a number of different examples, this one is without doubt one of the best we have been on. Debut in 2000 she has been well cared for since completion and is presented in very good mechanical and aesthetic condition.
Built as double-high running at 200 PSI the engine is impressively powerful, we couldn’t quite believe that she pretty much effortlessly went up the long hill into our yard in top gear, almost everything needs dropping down a gear especially Fodens! Running at 200 PSI she is also very economical for a double high and I think on a run wouldn’t be far behind a compound version for coal and water use. On the road she is a free-steaming engine and eats up the miles with a 13-15 mph being a comfortable average cruising speed.
The professionally built boiler has been inspected by an independent boiler man for many years and is reported to be in sound condition, she received a new set of tubes a few years ago so should cause no issues for many years to come. Water feed is through mechanical water pump and reliable steam injector which picks up instantly and really throws the water in.
Overall, the engine has been built to a very high standard with no expense spared, the rear body is fully made of oak as is much of the cab. The cab roof was built by a boat builder, so the wood has a beautiful curve to it. The fabricated wheels offer the best of both worlds with a cast look but the comfort on pneumatics.
You might have guessed we are really impressed with this Foden, we are sure she will offer the new owner many miles of enjoyment both on the road or simply pottering around the rallyfield.
As with all our ready to rally engines she comes with everything you need to rally including coal, oil, extension chimneys and a full days tuition.
