We are pleased to offer for sale this very well turned out Aveling and Porter Steam Roller "Nulli Secundus"

Supplied new to St Albans Corporation in 1913, the roller spent its working life with the corporation as fleet number 3. The engine carried on working until the later days of steam before being sold into preservation in 1958 for the princely sum of £25.00.

Since entering preservation the engine has only had a few custodians, the most recent of which has enjoyed the engine since the late 1990s . Said gentleman was known for being rather particular about the engine, keeping it in very good condition both mechanical and cosmetically. On the road it is a strong performer and  has a good set of gears, it is well known in the Herts and Bucks area as it traveled almost exclusively to events under its own steam.

The engine was extensively restored in the late 80s early 90s at which time a new firebox was fitted. The boiler report shows good metal thicknesses all round.

Free steaming with plenty of power and with probably one of the best exhaust barks when working hard (we might be slightly bias owning a similar engine) they are a popular roller for both newcomers to full size steam and those with more experience. These earlier engines have a slide valve cylinder arrangement, a design which Avelings reverted to in their later engines.

 

A set of firing irons and tarpaulin sheets are included in the sale.

Rollers of this standard do not come up for sale very often, it is ready to rally and enjoy and apart from the normal maintenance should require very little extra work in the coming years.
